The college application process is something that came upon us much quicker than we anticipated.  We’d heard horror stories from friends with children a little older than our first born, and in many ways were probably procrastinating, or trying to hide from it, because of the stories we’d heard.

The process is by no means the same as when my husband and I were applying many years ago.  We figured that out very quickly. It is incredibly confusing and seems to have more layers than we ever had to deal with.  Not to mention, the sheer number of schools that kids want to apply to now a days.

It is for this reason that we, as a family, could not be happier with our decision to bring Gina Klemm on to our team, when navigating these unchartered waters. Before we even signed on, we had a very thorough discussion with Gina (after the first five minutes I knew we’d made the right decision) regarding our goals and expectations as parents, but more important, Gina had a much longer and more in-depth discussion with our daughter about her goals, her hesitations, concerns and so many other questions she had about the process. I can’t begin to tell you the comfort level my daughter (and we) walked away with from that very first discussion. It has been like that for each meeting onwards.

My daughter is 100% comfortable talking with Gina, and Gina offers her suggestions and advise that absolutely helps keep her on track. She aligns with the school’s counselors on many things, but also offers a different perspective. One that we may not have been aware of without having Gina.

In my opinion, these school counselors do a good job, but the reality is that they are just overwhelmed.  They have a whole grade, split up among a handful of counselors.  I’m not at all saying this is not doable for these counselors, but I am saying that we wanted a different level of comfort, and a more personal interaction for our daughter.  We wanted to be sure nothing was being lost in translation, or in the sea of other students.
